Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka hosts diplomatic reception to celebrate 70th Anniversary of Independence
The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York celebrated Sri Lanka’s 70th Anniversary of Independence with a diplomatic reception held on 07 February 2018. Over 200 high dignitaries including a large and representative gathering of Permanent Representatives, senior officials of the UN, Sri Lankan professionals and members of the press among others, were present to mark the occasion. Ms Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General represented the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres.
The proceedings commenced with the singing of the National Anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil by two members of the expatriate community Dr. Esiri Karunaratne and Mr. Godfrey Tisseverasingham, following which Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka, Dr. Rohan Perera, delivered the welcome address.

Esiri it was lovely to see you, Chandrika and Wije Kotta’s participation at the 70th Independence day celebrations. Your singing of the National anthem with Godfrey both in Sinhala and Tamil very nice indeed. I have not heard both being sung together before. It was an excellent rendition.

I have never heard of the national anthem sung in Sinhalese & Tamil at the same function!!.
I Would encourage more of this for Peace , Friendship & Unity during our short journey in this world.

I fully AGREE with Nisantha and Seelan- I have never heard the Srilanka National Anthem sung at the same event in both Sinhala and Tamil , and I just heard it now .
I too had a Great Feeling Friendship, of Peace and Unity – while ,listening to it now .

I thank Ambassador and Permanent Representative Dr. Rohan Perera for giving me the opportunity to sing the National Anthem on this special occasion.
I totally agree with Depthi,Seelan and Nisantha an event like this promotes Peace, Friendship and Unity among all.
When I sang the National Anthem at this event all of these were in my mind.
Any event such as this should be grasped with joy!
I thank all who responded for the nice comments.
