Funny– Events– in–the–Days –Gone– By

Those were hot🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞 April  Avrudu 🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰days , back in the Hopper 🍛🍛🍛House ,🏠🏠🏠🏠when we girls 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦👩‍👩‍👦‍👦used to study , out on the balcony,  burning the midnight oil .🕐🕐🕐

We would drag out our chairs, table lamps🏮🏮sit out on the balcony in small study groups,  and cram away,   Peacefully, way into the warm  tropical night .⚫️⚫️

No- Not Really ..

Not all were Sleeping in Heavenly   Peace  🛏🛏🛏  it seems……

Some  ‘ Restless  Lovers 🚶🚶🚶🚶‘ – (  to use Narme’s words ! )  but,  we used to call them ‘ Sarong Johnnies , would come by, stand under the lamp post on De Saram place , in front of Hopper House ,🥞🥞🏠  making funny noises  and doing things , playing with their ‘Thing’ under the sarong .

It was a while before us  Hopper House  Good Convent Girls  ( not from St Anthony’s Convent )-⛪️⛪️⛪️clued into what was going on ! and it irritated us , 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️disturbed our peaceful study groups .

Many methods 👯‍♂️👯‍♂️were used to discourage these  “ Restless Lovers- Sarong Johnnies  ‘—including our night watchman Mr Perera, who would go out  chasing them off from time to time, , police officers  👨🏼‍✈️👨🏼‍✈️👨🏼‍✈️chasing them away  etc . etc .

Nothing worked – and a Restless Bunch they were, much to our annoyance .

Nights 🌗🌗were getting hotter,  April Avurudu Festivities taking a fever pitch in the City of Colombo and beyond .

I suddenly had a brain wave –  !!

So I informed the all the  girls 👭👭🏃🏽on the  3 floors facing De Saram  Place, about my plan, and not to worry if they hear any unusual noise coming from the 3rd Floor – particularly Room #4- my room balcony .

I purchased a  long  string of fire crackers – “ Rathingcha “ ☄️☄️☄️☄️as we used to call them back then,   real big, loud ones , waited till the ‘ Restless Lovers- Sarong  Johnnies ‘ – were active in their pursuit of  their   Manly  Pleasures.

Then ——

I lit the string of  Fire Crackers-🔥🔥🔥🔥and threw them out the balcony, with all my might !

Off they flew out , ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️  with a Big Bang, into the hot ,   humid tropical night- like so many  Meteorites with a long trail  of blue – white  light and thick  smoke, as if they all  came  right  out of the clear starry tropical  night sky .🌙🌙🌙🌙

And off ran 🏃🏽🏃🏽🏃🏽🏃🏽 the “ Restless Lovers – Sarong Johnnies “ , and ran 🆘🆘🆘🆘they did ,  with all their speed and  might, before “ The  Thing  “ under the sarong caught FIRE !🔥🔥🔥

Peace , Peace , Peace Be Unto YOU All !!🔚🔚

  1. Deepthi – what a funny story. Loved reading it. It is as descriptive like all the unusual , lovely comments you make on a variety of subjects. The imogies 😇🙂🤗 you added made the story much more interesting..
    Thanks for sharing the story.

  2. Deepthi

no body can describe it better than you. As usual you told the story very vividly. yes i remember those annoying creatures. None of us could have successfully got rid of them, except you the mastermind. The images you have used made it so interesting.the talented woman of G bay.

  3. Very funny ! Definitely I am not part of the “Sarong Johnnies” We decent Bloemites never went out in Sarong (not to my knowledge). The sarong Johnnies must be from somewhere else.
Our Cooks walk around in Sarong – May be the cooks.
I must confess that I have been there only once, but on a motor bike with another Johnny – called Johnpulle to sing the Tom Johnny’s ” My My My Delilah”. We were not too drunk but wanted to have a break after midnight cramming !! – Definitely, no Sarong. We don’t wear Sarong on a Motor bike – it might get caught in the wheels!!
I feel sorry for the Cooks who got chased away by Mr Perera & the Crackers
    Yours most Innocent,

    1. Hey Seelan- I know that you are the Most Innocent of Them All !
” Out of the Mouths of Babes comes The Truth ”’ !!
Glad you enjoyed the Hopper House Holiday Fireworks .
see my note to you and the others below ,

    2. My dear Seelan was not a sarong Johnny!
Everyone knows you are a decent, honest, truthful bloke
Absolutely correct according to sober Seelan’s knowledge
Of never having gone towards Hopper house in a sarong
But how much of C2H5OH, needed to cloudy your thoughts?

  4. Dear 🦅D
Your story was a superb one and I 💕 loved reading every bit I of it.Only some one like you will have the guts to do it . 👍 Well done girl. I too can vividly remember them as my room was also on the road side but was too frightened l to do anything💇🏿💇🏿💇🏿. You stood up for all of the s and did what you thought was the best. Well done girl .😛😛😛😛 Praxy

    1. Hey Praxy- just saw your note .
I know you are in SL/ Colombo right now, and thanks for the Digital Art work – they are real cute , and really ‘light up ‘ the story ,
You know Praxy, we had a lot of peace , for a long time to come, after that Fire works episode .
Even the very stern Dr. C Phyllis Costa- who was our Sub warden at that time, enjoyed Fireworks !

      1. My dear Dilisena Tharuwa,
In advertantly you have solved a query I have had
Boys giving nick names to teachers was then a trend
Till you clarified her initial C of Dr Phyllis De Costa
I thought naughty boys had added S, to name Phyllis!

  5. Thank you Sam for the ‘Google Art work ‘ of the Hopper House !!!! I can see my self on the 3rd floor !!!
and Praxy, for the most lovely ,delightfully funny ‘digital art work’ from you little gizmo .

Nisantha, Rajes, Seelan- this is a combined effort – story by eagledeepthie, Sam and Praxy for wonderful images to make the Hopper House Holiday Fireworks come alive
Seelan- I do remember some guys singing My My My Delailah- as that was one of my very favourite songs back then, and even now.
So, now I know, who sang it – into the the stillness of the warm tropical night , to provide us girls with some entertainment of the ‘ good kind’ .
Never imagined quiet Johnpulle doing this- must be your influence – or you must have given him a bit of ‘gini watura ‘ !

Bloem Boys- they were a decent lot – those other guys, must have been the cooks !

Rajes- remember those group study nights !!
Living now, as I do on the shores of Georgian Bay , Ontario, Canada- those far away crazy simple days seem to flood my mind.

I am just wondering — how come only the three of you wrote something on this story ?
I think, others are tooo shy to comment – they must be taking a sneaky look at the Web post and laughing away, but, too shy to comment !

Any way- I had a good time telling the story, and thanks again Sam and Praxy .

  6. Dear Deepthie,
Good lesson to the street urchins or distress lovers
Whatever you call them must have learnt their lessons
It is so nice and hilarious the way you describe the episode
Thank you for sharing happy time, at De Saram place you had

  7. Yes my dear Ariya !
Those were the Good Days at Hopper House !
Rajes and my self- we know all about those good old days .
Yes- those sarong johnnies- as we called them, they sure learned their lesson that night and we had a lot of peace after that .

  8. My dear Deepthie,
To earn lasting peace many things done by dudes
This surely must be the first time a fire cracker used
How the hell you got that Idea, God only knows!
Main thing is the fact they surely got the message

  9. HI Ariya,
How in the hell did I get this idea ?
The Idea was born out of sheer frustration and desperation- to have some peace and study for those exams, sigs and god know what else .
Message went out to ALL !
    Peace Be Unto ALL !

  10. Hey Prof Ariya !
I am surprised you did not know the real name of the good anatomy demo cum subwarden .
It was sheer coincidence ( but some say that nothing happens by chance and coincidence ! ) that the REAL name and the ‘nick name ‘ sounded the same, with different letters – C and S !
Now you know — see what Sam’s blog has taught you .
We learn every day- ‘ How to Use Fire Works to your best Advantage ‘ , ” How different spelling sounds the same, ” — among other things !
    eagle D .
